King Crinklecrash :
How about Indiana Jones movies (any of the 3 are good and full of adventure), Eight Men Out is also a really good one (rated PG, about the White Sox throwing the series), come to think of it most of the older baseball movies are pretty good for kids, Field of Dreams is another. And who could forget ET...There might be a little language, but nothing too serious as far as I can remember in any of them. Good luck in the hunting!

Yeah, I think the Indian Jones movies would be fun, but....

I keep thinking about the guy getting impaled on the spikes at the beginning that Indiana sees on his way back out of the temple, that's pretty graphic, and the battle under the airplane where the guy gets done in by the propeller, not shown directly, but...And then the whole scene at the end. Hmm...

What age is the right age for a movie like Raiders of the Lost Arc? My guys are 7, 9, and going on 11. The two younger ones are too young for it, but is 11 old enough?

Has anyone shown Raider to their kids, at what age did you do it? I think it's a great adventure movie, and can't wait to show it to them, but I'm trying to get a feel for when the time is right.

Ultimately, you would have to be the judge of that, Anna. For those types of movies, however, 11 sounds right to me. It depends on the child, too.

To me it also makes a difference whether you're seeing it on TV or at the theater on big screen. Big screen is far more intense - the pictures larger than life, close up, sound extremely loud - TV is a lot calmer plus you can turn it off or take a break to talk about things. I let my younger ones see Star Wars and LOTR on DVD but not in the theater. Just my 2 cents!

LOL I was just thinking about this some more...

When I tried showing my oldest the movie "Signs" which is mainly very creepy, lots of suspenseful moments, he actually asked me to stop the film at one point and said he didn't want to watch the rest. Wink He had some bad dreams after that, was a bit too intense for him.

Then I remember showing the kids "Pee Wee's Big Adventure" which was hilarious. But my middle son had bad dreams about "Large Marge." That part scared him even though it is cartoony!

I guess my biggest reservation is people getting shot, which happens alot in Raiders. Makes me feel like a paranoid mom. You know that I've actually sent along the message to parents my kids are visiting that they are not allowed to play M-rated video games, and the movie thing has been a point of contention too. I mean my sons know 8-9 year old kids that are being allowed to play M-rated games!! ARRGH! (In our house, the joke is M stands for 'Mommy', they know they aren't allowed to play those games.)

I did take the oldest to see "Superman Returns" which he thought was OK. My middle son wants to see it too, and I'll probably take him.

I can't wait to share movies like Alien, Blade Runner, The Matrix, Dark City, Ghost Busters etc. But I am definitely struggling with what the right age is. *sigh*

So any input you experienced moms of older kids have on how you decided what the boundaries were, example movies and what age you decided was OK would be great to hear. Smile

I have to admit my boundaries were different with the oldest than for the others. Embarassed But, I think that's just part of parenting. For instance, Evan was 13 before he was allowed to see PG-13 movies for the most part. I went to see FOTR first then took him after discussing it with him and showing him pictures of the Orcs and such online - and only because we are huge LOTR fans was it even considered! (he was 11, I believe? 10 maybe? Can't remember the release date)

But when we went to Spiderman II I took my then, I think, 6 year old to see it. First I read the review on Plugged in - yeah, I know they are extremely nitpicky but where the kids are concerned the nitpickier the better! After reading the review, chose to take him with us. He also saw the first Pirates of the Carribean with us - I think the same year. I didn't pre-screen that one and was shocked at the details of the undead pirates. I thought he might freak out and have nightmares! But with older brothers in the house...well, it's just a fact that younger brothers will see more, faster, than first children. He can handle a lot more at his age than his older brothers could - or was that just me? Laughing

So I would say research any film before going to see it. Go see it yourself first if you prefer. Great date night! Wink
Read the nitpicky reviews, and judge in terms of how sensitive your child has been in the past. Always be willing to walk out of a theater. When in doubt, wait for the DVD. Smile

October Sky was very good, might not be interesting for the 6-year-old. Others--Homeward Bound, Eight Below, Duma, Free Willy, Princess Bride, The Black Stallion, Never Cry Wolf, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

Quick plug for a good but criminally under-marketed animated film, The Iron Giant.

Oh my goodness, don't even get me started on this one! One of the best animated movies ever, an extraordinary story. Funny and heart-breaking with the most incredible message - YOU choose what you want to be. Just thinking about the ending makes me tear up every time.

This movie was Brad Bird's first, he went on to do The Incredibles.

Highly, highly recommended.

My son (7) loves Raiders.

We just saw Barnyard this afternoon. It was very entertaining. I highly recommend it. Saw Monster House last week. While it's not really that scary, it had an overall creepiness that would be too much for most little ones. I think most people can tell how much their kids can handle. When in doubt....DON'T.

Raider? Hmmm...Believe I was nine when I saw it. But then again, I was watching horribly dark movies when I was 13. (Matrix, anyone?)

My friends saw it when they were 7. As for the scenes which are spooky, I wouldn't be that cautious. I'm not a parent, but you must assure your kids that everything isn't that scary. The spiders freaked me out a bit, but then I saw the guy was safe. All the scenes don't really show the scary part. Just set it up.

I thought the last scene was hilarious! I burst out laughing! I'm weird.

I know we are talking about movie night at home but we just took the kids (4 year old twins) to see "Horton Hears a Who". It will be on dvd soon enough. I may have enjoyed it more than the kids did. wonderful movie!

Great thread, I got some great ideas from it.

thanks.

You know - my 11 year old and I went to see Horton Hears a Who. It was a lot of fun.
I also adored Enchanted when we saw it at the theater. Now, it is on DVD. We just got Raiders of the Lost Ark to see at home so I can judge whether we'll go to the new one in the theater.

Although, I don't know why I bother worrying sometimes. She was at a sleepover a couple weeks ago and the mom rented them Disturbia - geesh.

We went to a Drive In. And for $10 total for all of us we watched Horton Hears A Who and Mim's Island. Though Horton was funny, I really loved Mim's Island. The plot (and lesson) of that story seemed to speak to me.

Owooo! I forgot we saw Nim's Island over the weekend (nim, not mim). It was different than I thought it would be - thought it would be more of a Swiss Family Robinson. Jody Foster was REALLY different in this flick.

Sir Biscuit :
It seems like there were several Disney films that centered around some fictitous college - Medvale or something...I remember loving them as a kid. I think they starred Fred Murray. And then there were a couple starring a very young Kurt Russel...
My kids and I really liked the Cody Banks movies, as well as Disney's remake of Around the World in 80 days.

I believe this might be, "The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes". Disney is perhaps the best source for good wholesome kid shows. I agree with a poster above, that the best source for available review may be Netflix. I think their site can be looked through without joining.
