Several of you have been asking about my injuries from skydiving. I went to a follow up doctor visit yesterday, which was exactly one month after I sustained the injuries.
Doctor said I'm still progressing very fast. I have another appointment in 6-8 weeks and she is confident that I should be completely or at least mostly healed by then. I still have a great deal of pain by the evening, making it difficult to walk, but mornings are so much better. I can walk (slowly) without a whole lot of pain in the mornings. My doctor asks me each visit to rate the pain on a scale of 1 to 10... mornings are about a 3 on both legs and evenings are now down to about a 5 or 6 (to put it in perspective, when I had my son I broke my tailbone during childbirth and no epidural and I would put that childbirth in category 7 and the time I had my daughter with an epidural I would say a 1). When I first injured myself, my left leg was at the full 10 for pain and my right leg was at 9. My left leg rarely swells now because I favor it... the right leg bears most of my weight and has a great deal of swelling by the evening.
I will begin Physical Therapy soon. They haven't contacted me to make the appointment yet so I have no idea how often I'll have to attend that. My doctor said at this point she sees absolutely no reason I would need an MRI.
The great news is that since so many stores have added motorized wheelchairs to their locations, I'm able to do *most* of what I need to do. I still can't go to the grocery alone because I can't load all of the groceries into my car without assistance, nor can I bring all of the groceries in. But the occasional solo trip to Target or Wal Mart is completely doable. My sister came down for a visit and was kind enough to push me in a wheelchair through the mall and we even raced down the ramps (when nobody was around to run into that is). My husband is so sweet that he suggested a day at the zoo and he also pushed me around in a wheelchair. I greatly miss not being able to go to the Japanese Stroll Garden or the Nature Center because I love the outdoors. My daughter begs me to take her to Silver Dollar City (an amusement park in Branson) and I have to fight back tears when I tell her I'm just not strong enough yet. I'm STILL glad I went.

Wow! I guess from your initial post that I didn't realize how serious your injuries were. I'm sooooo glad you are doing better. It's a darn shame you don't live closer - I could help you bring in the groceries! I'm sure it would be nice to be able to accomplish more things on your own. I'm also really, really glad that you have such great people in your life that you don't absolutely have to right now.
Keep on going with the therapy and taking care of yourself!!

I have a very high pain tolerance since I've been injured so many times in my life. Sometimes I downplay my pain because I just want to get past it but unfortunately this is one injury that just isn't going to go away quickly. More than likely I also downplayed my pain because I was just so excited that I'd lived my dream. It's just really getting old now and I want to be active again so bad that I'm going nuts! Hopefully after my physical therapy (twice a week for 4 weeks beginning next Wednesday) I will be the "same old Jenn" and (crossing my fingers, knocking on wood, etc.) be able to take my daughter to Silver Dollar City again.
However, on the upside, since I can't even reach my feet to put lotion on them, my husband didn't even argue when I told him I was going tonight to get a foot treatment! I told the esthetician about my injuries and she was very careful and it felt sooooooooooooo good!

I'm glad you're doing better!! Wow, you really have been through a rough month!! Take it easy, and use this healing time to get some playtime in. You are in my thoughts and prayers as you recover.

Ahhhh, so that's how you get a foot treatment without the other half complaining!
Don't downplay your pain. Trust me, I've seen patients who have had serious injuries but brushed it off, trying to be tough or thinking it wasn't that bad. If you have pain, that is your body's way of telling you, "Something isn't right!" Be a good patient and do your therapy!!

Yes, yes it is. To get a foot treatment with no complaints, you must exit a plane at 2.65 miles above ground then don't flare and drop like a rock from 15 feet in the air going 25mph.
On the other hand, you could tell your other half that your friend spent $279 for a jump course and jump, so far at about $150 in doctor copays and medications, gosh only knows what physical therapy will cost, and her hubby allowed her to go to the Esthetics school for a $15 foot treatment with no argument. Tell him you are gonna SAVE him the other $429 plus physical therapy and you just want the foot treatment.

I'm being as good a patient as I can. It's hard to explain but I just don't feel the pain like other people do. I know there's pain because I can't walk... the legs won't do what I want them to do... but it only actually hurts if I push it. Right now my legs will do more than they did at first and the fact that I feel better now makes me realize that it hurt more to begin with.
Maybe it's because of my high pain tolerance that I push my limits. A hard skydiving landing certainly isn't the worst injury I've sustained, only the most notable since most people don't do it. My mother used to joke that they had my picture in the doctor's lounge at the hospital... they knew me by first name as soon as I walked in the door (remember Tim the Toolman Taylor? That was me.) and always said, "What is it today Jennifer?" I felt like I should have a frequent injury card... 10 xrays and the 11th is free. The funny part is that when I got my concussion from playing mini-golf (YES MINI GOLF), I went to the hospital and the doctor (different state) took one look at me and asked, "Do I know you?" My sister burst into laughter.

I think my other half would either think I was insane if I said I wanted to jump out of a plane or offer to give me a push! I think I'll just tell him that would be a great way to keep me happy... I know that would work!
ROFL @ "Do I know you!?" Okay, Jenn, please... you'll have to blog your story about your mini-golf episode. I can only imagine, especially since you jump out of airplanes to get a foot treatment!! JAJA!

My husband still teases me about the mini golf injury. It's simple, really. I was on the 3rd date with my husband. My son was 4 at the time and Jim thought it would be a great way to get to know Taylor by taking us to mini golf. It was so sweet. Anyway, they were finishing up a hole and I walked to the next hole. The hole was a raised gazebo and there was a maze-like ramp that you putted down into and the ball would bump around (remember pachinko?) and then it came out the bottom onto the green. Someone had left their Big Gulp cup right next to the rail in the gazebo and remembering my mother's words, "Always leave a place nicer than you found it." I bent over to pick it up and put it in the trash which was right next to the gazebo. When I stood up, I hadn't realized the rail of the gazebo was overhanging toward the INSIDE of the gazebo and WHACK!!! I smacked my head so hard on that hand rail I landed flat on the ground and was out for a couple of seconds. My (then boyfriend) husband didn't even realize it. I was already coming to when they walked up and not wanting to appear like a complete idiot on the 3rd date, I played it off entirely, finished the mini golf game and Jim drove us home. Later when I could barely walk from being so dizzy, I went to the hospital and it was determined I had a mild concussion.
I've survived concussions, broken bones, collapsed lung, brown recluses, 3rd degree burns, foreign objects in ears & nose, cuts from rusty objects, rubber bands shot into eyes, grinding fingers in coffee grinders, you name it. My mom said I was a klutz... I just like to have fun and don't let things hold me back. Perhaps I should start a blog... I could title it, "Jenn: A farce of nature." JAJAJAJA
