I saw a little video on Global Warming and was amazed. I never knew this was happening...It's when humans send gasses and harmful chemicals into the atmosphere and the air gets warmer and hotter everyday. Then I went to the movies last night to see Ratatouille (However you spell it) and they had a movie about Global Warming and it's affects all over Antarctica. The snow and ice are melting, ice blocks and mounds are breaking off and landing ito the water. Sooner or later, when all the ice melts it will overflow states and countries. Thats all due to humans! We send gasses from cars and other chemicals being sent to the air. Thats we create Hybrid cars that use energy. Even though they are a little ugly, they can help us a lot in the long run. Also, less snow is falling each year. If there is not enough snow, we will have no water for the western states. Snowpack is what we get from snow. Snowpack- Humans melt ice and snow and make it into water. I couldn't believe it! We have to do something about this. I'm sure there are millions more reasons why Global Warming can harm us, but here are some I know. What do you guys have to say about this?

I hate global warming so much that I will never ride a car next year to school, and the next year and all the years after that.
But I'm surprised! I thought everybody knew about global warming. Well I guess I was wrong.

Do more research. There are just as many noted scientists that have evidence that Global warming is not true. Goofo, get a glass put ice in it and fill with water. Let the ice melt. Did it over flow the glass? So when an iceberg melts, does it raise the level of the water?

Well, I watched a movie that said it would overflow some parts of the world. And it has been getting hotter each and every year.

I believe that humans increased the speed in which the globe has warmed. I, also, believe that their is a cycle to the climate. El Nino's hit every certain year. MO flooded in 92 or 93. This year OK and TX are flooding. "They" drilled a core out of Greenland in 1981. 40,000 (?) years ago it was a lush tropical forest. Now its ice...
I don't have facts and figures but I've always wondered about the supposed meteor that killed off the dinosaurs. Dinosaurs were supposed to have lived in hot climates and then boom they are gone. The theory being that a meteor hit and created a "nuclear winter" for eons b/c of the dust clouds that cut the sun from the earth. This created the ice age. How do we know that the meteorites dust clouds aren't vaporizing after all these thousands, millions of years? Once again theory that there is nothing to support it or back up.

1) To the person who used the ice in the glass analogy - wrong - the ice cubes in this case are outside of the glass (glaciers on land, etc...)
2) McDonalds is the single worst perpetrator of Global warming - cows are 1000x worse than all of the automobiles and industrial pollution combined (they eat Oxygen providing plants and emit Carbon Dioxide (which is what is trapping the heat in our atmosphere) - go check out some pictures of the miles and miles of cows in South America being bred for slaughter then do the math)
3) There is fairly conclusive prove that our galaxy is actually warming up and is having a big effect on Earth (as a bonus to this, the galaxy's current alignment is parallel to that found during the era the dinosaurs went extinct)
4) My personal opinion is that most talk about global warming is simply humanity's inflated ego believing we can cause so big of an effect - I would tend to go with climate cycles and the galaxy getting warmer long before I thought we as a species are having this kind of effect on the planet)

I also agree that the "cycle" MAY SEEM to be in a warming trend, but I would like to offer four little tidbits for all of you concerned people to think upon.
1)- We have had many "Ice Ages" in our past before cars existed. HOW DID ALL THAT ICE MELT?
2)- How do "we" know what Earth's "normal" temperature is supposed to be?? Is it possible that.....over the millions of years.......our current climate is much cooler??
3)- Scientists and researchers need MONEY to fund thier research. That is why every week there is a news story about the latest "scientific study". For example.......cholesterol! Five years ago, cholesterol was terrible! The next year....a DIFFERENT scientist says that there is good and bad cholesterol. Now...we are told that we want high GOOD cholesterol and low BAD cholesterol. Global warming is the same.....it is a field that has 1 billion different "effects" to study. Many of the latest trends that we hear about are driven by the scientific community themselves. No one is going to donate $1,000,000 for a 10 year study on the declining numbers of the Brazilian Stink Bug due to global warming! BUT....IF THE BRAZILIAN STINK BUG CAN "PROVE" THAT GLOBAL WARMING WILL "KILL US ALL", then that is more "sensational" and the money for funding comes pouring in! Sensationalism is what our "short attention span" culture wants these days! Why else does everyone love to watch LIVE police chases?
4)- Whenever the Earth's past is talked about, the "experts" use sayings like "...between 10 and 20 MILLION years ago......." It sounds pretty exact doesn't it? But, listen to what they are really saying! 10 million years gap?? If "carbon dating" is soooooo precise, why is there never any SPECIFIC numbers?
BOTTOM LINE ...If you want to use energy efficient cars, solar power, recycle and so on.....then you should be commended! Your love for our wonderful planet is filled with good intentions. Just keep one thing in mind....don't let anyone DECIDE for you about any topic! AND DON'T LET SOMEONE MAKE YOU FEEL BAD BECAUSE YOUR FOLKS DRIVE A GAS GUZZLER! Use your own mind and come up with your own philosophy on EVERY topic. Then you will see ALL things in the only light that matters........YOURS!

Remember Gore invented the Internet and he may just have invented Global warming....
We have only been tracking the Earths changes for a short time with respect to Earth years and we really have no idea how long a cycle is nor do we which one we are in.....
I remember the year when chicken little said the sky was falling.... we had the coldest and longest weather here. Go figure!
Could we do things better? Yep.
Should we stop eating animals? Hey Methane is one of the biggest ones (not cars).
It takes alot of 'gas' (oil) to create 'green gas' (Bio gas from corn / plants) and just recently saw a report saying it ain't that great of a deal but people will buy into being 'green' and wanting to use it....oh yeah ...what about the chemicals used to produce that bio gas? They applied alot of 'stuff' to make sure the plants grew and stayed healthly. I don't think they looked at the big picture from end to end.
I heard about the movie the but didn't see it...
I come here to escape from this type of stuff...I ignored the thread for a while and finally broke down and read it.....
BTW I drove my SUV 6678 miles and used 374.8 gallons of gas this summer.....and loved it

The original poster's age is 13. I don't want to belittle this person, but they are probably being flooded with Global Warming this and Global Warming that everywhere they go! No "kid" in school is gonna go against thier "science" teacher and look like they "don't care about the environment"! My main point for the original poster was to use thier own mind and reach a position....(right or wrong)...by themselves.
Good Thread...

I know about school....man crazy stuff the kids bring home...you now they skip right over the Bay-of-pigs now and a lot more makes you wonder about the slat on history that California puts on History. Yes - Cali basically dictates what is taught thru out the land. The publishers cater to them since they are the biggest customer so the rest of the USA gets their books. See now you got me started
It is a good discussion...

So true! So much history has been wiped out of the books to focus on one area or another. More has been rewritten or the facts are ignored and the kids are simply told what to think or how to feel about the basic idea of what happened.
And teachers can certainly be guilty of injecting their own personal beliefs and politics into their lessons. One of my greatest pleasures in life is seeing how my 16 YO son has learned to respectfully challenge his teachers when they do this and engage in a civil debate. Everyone should research the issues thoroughly and decide for themselves, not just accept the first thing they hear as fact, even if (especially if?) they learn it in school. The world is full of doomsday reports by people with an agenda, presented as absolute fact and as if anyone who doesn't accept it doesn't CARE.
I won't go into my own beliefs about global warming but in general - and this applies to a million other things - we have gotten ultra paranoid in so many ways. Yes, we could do things better, and sometimes we should. But we are an industrialized nation and that isn't going to change. Let's do the best we can with what we have and stop freaking out our kids and attacking each other over it (I mean in the world at large, not that we're doing that here ).
Don't hate me because I eat McDonald's and shop at Wal-Mart.
Edit: I also drive a humongous gas-guzzling van. But that's only because I have a huge family. Well, there are those who would say I am irresponsible for having so many kids (hmm, which to give back?) See how it starts? I'll follow my conscience; everyone else can and should follow theirs.

Akon, that's great you and your family made this decision but I hope you don't eat at any other public restaurant either.
You do realize that MANY of not all restaurants have issues of some sort or do things portrayed in that movie.
I eat at McDonald's, and I drive a mini van. If global warming is all my fault then I will just have to carry that burden on my shoulders.

Global Warming is a big problem, but lots of people can't bike and walk everywhere they go. I take the bus to school, even though I'd much rather bike, but bus's are much better than each student driving. I think it's great that almost all schools use busses now.

I too have seen this for a while and kept quiet. However, here's my booklet...
Beware the rhetoric that is purported as fact. Globally, the earth appears to be getting warmer. I have taken the first step that is called admission. However, if one studies Lake Michigan, one readily sees that the indications are clear that the lake once was much deeper than at present. Remember the ice age? It was an age and not an eternity. Surely we don't think all that ice just went away one day? It happened through (Oh no, dare I say it...?) warming. Or else lots of little dwarves with hammers and picks removed it to somewhere we haven’t found.
Remember Kyoto some years ago? That conference was designed to get leaders of the world's industrial nations to sign an accord. Requirements were broad and specific. Not much news was given to the details. Mostly the world condemned the US (our President) for not signing. The billions (trillions) of dollars that would have been required would have certainly affected the greenhouse emissions. One report indicated that if all nations agreed, in 20 years, the rate would be reduced by a whopping 0.5%.
There's a lot of talk lately about greenhouse gasses and global warming. There's a lot of talk about reducing our individual "carbon footprint". There's also a lot of reputed and prominent scientists that are decrying this as a bandwagon, unfounded, and based on assumption made popular by fear. Remember fear and politics can ally themselves to create formidable impressions.
Now I don't have all the answers. But recorded history indicates cyclical changes in climate. As recently as 600 years ago there was a period where temperatures rose worldwide. In that time, mankind lived longer and better than the few centuries before and after. More rain and longer growing seasons meant increased harvests. Milder winters meant higher survival rates in otherwise bad seasons. There arae other examples, some even more recent. Want more on climatic cycles? Google "Little Ice Age" or "Medieval Warm Period". I don't think McDonald's, Ford/Chevy/Dodge/etc, or Heavy global industry was around then. Then again, neither were city sanitation, residential hot and cold running water, electricity, PC's... OK, I'm back.
Do I believe the earth is warming? Yes I do. By how much? Over what period of time? Who can say. Remember Galileo? Oh yes, he's the fellow who invented the... thermometer. let's see now, ,when was that? Somewhere around 1593, and after that records began to be made. Do I current warming spells out an unavoidable Doomsday? Not necessarily. The best anyone can do is to review facts (not fear and indoctrination), and arrive at their own conclusions. Are you passionate? Excellent! Be so. Stand for your belief and you are strong and courageous. Be diligent and teachable, and you demonstrate humility. Exercise that learning and humility and you demonstrate wisdom.
Incidentally, I drive a Chevy truck. But I insist on lighting my charcoal with sticks instead of lighter fluid. See, I can save a lump of coal.

On another note I was listening to an editorial last night about this Earth Aid Concert Al Gore is promoting now. The reporter pointed out that the carbon footprint of something like that hardly promotes reducing greenhouse gasses. I doubt the stars will be car pooling or walking to the event and I imagine the people going to the event will be driving as well. Not to mention the electricity required to put on an event such as that. He equated it to having a Nascar race to promote the end of fossil fuels in cars. I thought he made a good point.
I think my biggest problem with this whole issue is more that we are having people that obviously have the money to buy Hybrid cars and pay the extra money for the more "environmentally friendly" products trying to make someone on an average income just trying to make ends meet feeling guilty for their choices. Recently I heard a comparison between the new Toyota Prius Hybrid and a Toyota Corolla, around here it would take about 10 years of driving the Corolla around before you would break even in gas savings money from driving a hybrid vehicle. I am all for helping the environment but I am really sick of it costing so darn much.
I also would like to see these big stars practice what they preach. I recently heard that John Travolta uses his private jet to go the places he needs and he is apparently one of the big supporters of cutting back on greenhouse gasses. Hmmmm don't think that private jet is helping anything.

He use to live in the Daytona Beach area but the private airport was too small for his big plane...the types the airline fly so he move to the "country" and developed a new burb for flyers with large jets. Being a Florida a boy I still keep up with the home town news...
BTW yes there are a couple of nieghborhoods in Florida that cater to flyers.

I saw this on Yahoon news tonight and figured I'd share it since someone mentioned cows and their part in global warming.
We can now all sleep tonight knowing they are trying to do their part too!
