Double checking the Vista thing
View Single PostView Single Post

Yes, it's time to go back Shocked I'm finding I can't play the open server on Pirates due to....are you ready? MY VIDEO DRIVER! It's Vista only and I can't update it with XP soooooo.......last update was over a yr and a half ago so they may actually be right this time?

Anyway I just want to double check that Vista is TT safe (open and test)? Anything special I have to do? I searched the forums and everything related either has broken links or is so old that it's probably out of date.

Bottom line is if I upgrade (or back grade or whatever) then TT SHOULD just work?

The one plus side? I'll have sound again! Very Happy

David's new laptop has VISTA and the only problem he has had is he can't hold down the cntrl key long enough the golf and the ceo. This of course is probably an laptop issue not vista.

I just switched over to Vista when I got my new laptop. (I bought a Dell...Inspiron 1720 in PINK!! Yes, I got a PINK laptop, and the mouse is PINK too!!) I've been loving having a laptop, there's so much freedom there!! (BTW, I got PINK so that the boys wouldn't WANT to play on my computer, seems to be working so far... Mr. Green )

I have been having some problems though, mainly with getting dropped. I was thinking that it's the fact that I'm on a wireless now? BUT, I went back upstairs earlier, and hooked up on my son's hardline, and I did experience 2 drops even there. Now, it could be TT, with all the new Boss things being added...not sure. Maybe it's our new gaming router? I'm not sure if everything was followed to the T when the router was installed. If it weren't for the disco's, I'd say that Vista has been wonderful so far.

Has anybody else been experiencing problems with being disconnected with Vista?!?

Congrats on your new PINK laptop! Hard to say, my laptop has vista and desktop has xp sometimes when we play 3 at once we disco but I think its a bandwith thingy! could be a wireless too, lady snappy (pkdmrd) has an awesome guide link for porting new computers with the wireless and trigger porting thingys. It helped my playing alot I have better luck on my desktop with xp than laptop with vista though...............

Is it only the Vista lappy getting booted? I'd be more inclined to think it's the router, but there's so many different things it could be. I have regular boot probs too, and I have a Vista lappy (and XP PC). I've been trying many different things to narrow my problem down, but I've yet to figure it out completely. I definitely get the boot more often wireless than wired. Definitely get it more often on the Vista lappy than I do the XP PC. I tried the router port triggering thing, and it helped, but I still disco. I took the router out altogether and went straight through the modem (which is a good way to figure out if the prob lies with your router). Banana Brain had a good post about various things to try, too (it's down the page a ways):

http://www.toontownfriends.com/toontown-discussion8200.html

I know how frustrating it is to keep getting booted! Sorry you're going thru that! And I would Love to see a pix of the sweet pink lappy!!

If you have enabled port triggering for ports 6112 and 6667, have the latest video drivers, know that your modem is properly working and are still experiencing disconnects you may need to adjust your MTU value. The MTU (maximum transmission unit) is described as the size of the largest datagram that can be sent over a network. If the datagram is larger than an MTU, the datagram must be fragmented into multiple smaller datagrams. What this means for MTUs and Toontown....too high an mtu value will cause fragmentation of the data packet and you will experience disconnects.

Here is a good site that explains how to find the correct mtu value for your home network.

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/5793

Once you have determined the correct mtu value, access your router's configuration, and change the value to that number (and don't forget to add 28 and document the value that you are changing just in case you need to change it back). The site suggests downloading DrTCP (which I have never tried) Since most of you are using a router, there is no need to download any program---determine the value, access your router configuration and insert this number as your mtu setting)

Hope this helps and isn't too "geeky" and confusing.

This is what my test showed:

C:\Documents and Settings\Kathy>ping www.google.com -f -l 1492

Pinging www.l.google.com [72.14.205.104] with 1492 bytes of data:

Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set.

I started with 1492, and decreased by ten until I received a reply, rather than the message that the packet needed to be fragmented. At 1472 I received a reply.
When I add 28 to 1472 (the value where my packet did not fragment) my correct mtu value is 1500, the default value, so I do not need to change my MTU settings.

Good luck Smile

My son has been saying that he's getting booted off of WoW, where he never has before on XP. We bought him a gaming computer, a desktop, probably spent too much for his ($1,400), but it was something that Daddy approved. It's a HUGE computer, we were laughing when he took it out of the box!! The thing must stand 2 feet tall!! Anyway, back on track here...he's experiencing disco's also, and he's on a hardline, not even connected up to the router. BUT, I did talk to hubby last night, he stated he used the default system when he hooked up the router, so, going to play around with it a bit.

I did hook up using just a hard line, and I experienced just 2 disconnects, but that was in just about an hour period...so I figured, I would be just as good without the line.

A picture of the sweet pink lappy?!? I'll tell you, I just love having it! IT'S MINE!! No one can have it but me!! Laughing

Banana Brain, How are things going since you reconfigured all of that?!? I am definitely going to try to work with the router today, even though it seems the problem seems to be leaning more toward Vista? Usually hubby's the one to take care of things like that, but I'm not going to wait another week for him to come home to work on it! Thanks for the info...

Did I mention yet.....You guys are great!!? Thanks!

BTW congrats on the new Pink laptop. I'm sure its a beauty Smile

A few months ago, I invested in a DLink gaming router (DGL 4100....they also make a wireless version DGL 4300). This was probably one of the best ways I've spent 100 bucks lately. This router is SWEET!!! I have done absolutely nothing to the router....no port triggering, no adjusting mtu's, etc and I have yet to disconnect. This router is, IMO, a great router for people that aren't comfortable with accessing and changing default router configurations. It also provides gigabit ethernet versus 100 mbs per sec.

Before this router, I had a Linksys router. With my old linksys router I had to manually adjust the router's configurations for port triggering which solved almost all of the disconnects. Once I adjusted the mtus, I didn't have any more discos (cept for the dreaded video driver update discos Smile )

A little off topic, but....Here are a couple of sites for Vista/WOW problems. I don't have Vista (probably won't get it until service pack one comes out) so I'm not very familiar with the OS and its issues:

From WOW:

http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=76819853

And microsoft:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934430

I'll continue searching and post anything else I find.

We have the D-Link router, just got it when the computers were delivered. We actually have the DGL-4500, wireless gaming router. It was $199, not sure what all the specs are on it, and not really sure what to think of it so far with having so many problems. I'm sure my friends on TT are getting a bit leary of playing with me... Confused

Our old router was a Linksys also. Never really used it due to the fact that I was on a desktop and a hard line with XP.

Here is what I got from Disney today...

Dear Toontown Guest,

Thank you for your bug report.

It appears that DirectX is causing some conflicts within your system. We
recommend that you update DirectX from the following website:

http://www.microsoft.com/directx

We hope this helps and look forward to seeing you again soon in
Toontown!

Thank You,

Bea
Disney's Toontown Online Member Services

Here is what I had sent them...

Description:

I have a brand new computer, set up on Vista. It's a laptop, yes, but
we have a hardline running also. I have been playing TT wireless, and
have had MANY, MANY disconnects. So...today, I decided to try it out
with a hard line connected. I received quite a few disconnects with
that also.

Just now, I was in the CFO, in Nutty River, got to the craning round,
was about 1/2 way through, and it discoed on me. This is the 3rd time
today that it's diconnected me in the craning round!!!!!!!

I know it's not my junk, cause my junk is new. When I am wireless, it's
on a brand new GAMING router that we purchased through Dell.
Can't be the router either.

I've taken their advice, and installed the updates from DirectX, we'll see what happens.

Wow, Disney answered you and they didn't tell you it was your video drivers? Did they hire new techs??? Hope that the update for direct x solves your discos.

After installing, I went on TT, and attempted a CFO. It booted me half way through the cog round. Then while I was standing on the steps, it booted me again, and then again. Grrrr!

Banana you just made my brain hurt Razz

I use a Linksys and so far so good. I'm wireless on a laptop for over 2 years and the only time I disco is if I hit THE BUTTON or if everyone else disco's too. During my short Vista time no problems with that either. DirectX was another story. With Vista I pretty much turned all security things off with that and then it worked. (except test...for some reason I could get on test ONE day and that was it) I'm hoping all these issues have been fixed since my last Vista attempt. Back then TT had nothing Vista compatable.

Wish me luck. If I'm not around here for a few days next week you'll know why! Vista did it!

You're saying that you turned off all security and it worked well?!? My hubby installed McAfee on mine last weekend. The last time I was booted, and tried to log back in, it came up with something about the security firewall. Saying that I needed to allow access for TT. When I went to McAfee, it stated that TT was given access. Hmmm...interesting.

I'm just going to have to explore all aspects of this, aren't I?!?

Oh, and Good Luck Nanner!! Razz
