(CNN) -- A magnitude 5.4 earthquake, centered 127 miles east of St. Louis, Missouri, shook southern Illinois at 4:36 a.m. (5:36 a.m. ET) Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
There were no immediate reports of damage, according to USGS spokeswoman Jessica Sigala.
The epicenter of the earthquake was about 3 miles below ground and 41 miles north-northwest of Evansville, Indiana.
People as far north as Chicago and as far west as St. Louis reported feeling the quake, Sigala said.
=========================================
Add Michigan to that list....This happened at 5:36am this morning, the metro Detroit area felt it too.
There are no accounts of anybody getting hurt, I sure hope and pray that everybody is ok....so far, I haven't heard of any accounts.

I was sleeping but I did wake up at about that time, wonder if that was why? I do remember there was one there when I was a kid, I was living in Arkansas at the time and was at a friend's house and all the knick-knacks were rattling on the shelf, I was scared to death! A few years later we were visiting up St. Louis way and found out that the fault line there is as big as San Andreas? AM I remembering that right because it doesn't sound right, LOL!!
Then we bought earthquake insurance for a few years because some "expert" was scaring us all down here saying it was time for that one to go off in a big way. We don't have that insurance anymore, will have to count on FEMA
I hope everyone was all right!!

Good thing I had more coffee before replying...confused over east and west a bit here. Haven't seen anything about it yet, but certainly hope all are well. No clue on your facts there Z but it is surprising the number of fault lines around. There was one somewhere in VA once though just a teeny tiny one. I hate to hear of them since my brother has been in San Fran area for a few years now. Always makes me nervous.

Awww I missed it??? I LOVE earthquakes! A 5 is hardly enough to do too much damage. It'll just shake ya up a lot. We get those a lot in southern Cali T.T
I've only been in a couple 5.0's but the one i remember the most was at my cousins house. We heard it before stuff started movin lol. The aftershocks lasted for hours after that one too. I miss earthquakes v.v (yes, I am aware that I am strange, but i like it ^_^)
The one I'm really worried about is the San Andreas Fault. when it hits its going to either slingshot my hometown to Las Vegas or Cali's gonna break off. No one knows when it's gonna happen though which is the scariest part.

I didn't feel it because I was in my sleep, but I guess I was close enough to. South Wisconsin, about as far away or closer to St. Louis than Chicago is.

Just saw on the news it was felt as far north in WI as Green Bay. I felt nothing since I was doing what I should have been doing at 1 am. SLEEPING!

Here is what I remember about quakes....
I lived in Columbia, MO. 2 hrs west of St Louis. There is a fault line there. I was told there is a fault comparable to San Andreas in Missouri. Does it go N/S or E/W? I don't know?
In CA, the is Hayward Fault....it runs straight throw Fremont, Newark and Hayward (you guessed it.) It is wider and deeper than San Andreas, but not as long. Then there is the Loma Preada (spelling) fault which caused the 1989 in San Fran.

Likewise, I'm sure.
Actually it woke me up. But then I ignored it and went back to sleep.

My mom had gotten up to go to the bathroom at around that time. After she got back into bed, she said all of a sudden it felt like the room was moving, like she felt dizzy...I'm sure she was feeling the quake, but then she just went back to bed...

That is called the New Madrid Fault. It runs N/S. Last big one was in 1811, 1812. The Mississippi River ran backwards and created Reel Foot Lake(sp). That quake was felt all the way to Boston.
Growing up in Memphis, I remember several small earthquakes, nothing compared to the ones I felt in Calf.

Glad to hear everyone is okay.
We had a small earthquake when we lived in Chattanooga a few years ago. There is a fault line that goes along the Applachian mountains I think. I remember hearing one of my cookie jars rattling and wondering what was causing it and also heard a rumble. Later heard on the news it was an earthquake. That's about all the earthquake experience I'd like to have.

Hey, I lived on the Hayward fault. Had lots of earthquakes... I remember the one best in 1989... interrupted the world series. A 5 isn't too bad, those happen quite a lot, and usually don't cause too much damage... maybe a crack in a wall or something. I am glad everyone is ok.

I lived on the Hayward fault, too! Not until 2000. I was watching the World Series in 1989. It was very memorable just watching it.

This morning when I turned on the tv, I just caught the end of a report and heard earthquake and felt in Illinois. I thought No, NOT possible! Also thought, how ironic because some of my kids and I were watching a weather/storm show JUST LAST NIGHT, and I had sarcastically said to them, "Well... I am fine and dandy here in the Midwest... I'd rather take my chances on getting sucked outta my basement than the earth opening, falling in and then being crushed... Atleast a tornado would be an E-ticket ride out and you guys will eventually find me in a neighbors tree and can give me a proper burial and you can come visit." Should have seen the 10 year old, hands on hips turn to me and say, "Soooo... There are not earthquakes in the midwest?" Sheesh... When did she learn how to do the one-lifted-eyebrow-mama-glare?
Hope everybody is okay. I just got home within the hour and haven't seen he full report.
