Thanks for pointing this punctuation stuff out! Hope I'm not messing up a lot! It makes things a lot easier to read with the right punctuation. Wink

I didn't know we were being graded either. Normally when I talk to friends, I feel I don't have to be perfect and put sentences together in the perfect way or use spellcheck to make sure every word is spelled properly. I thought that was the point of being friends with someone. But maybe not.

At any rate, funy thread. Made me laugh....

I was going to drive Lady Z nuts and put in lots of !!!!! or ????, but she beat me to it by telling me not too Smile.
Grades are optional, making sure everything can understand and read easily what you write - priceless!

I would say that falls under "irritating posting style", which can be pretty easily dealt with. Wink

Don't give anyone any ideas! Laughing

Perhaps you missed the constructive part of the thread? Confused Or at least the underlying point.

But when you're with friends, you do make sure they can understand your language, right? You don't just pronounce things however you want and expect them to understand, do you? And then if they said "I can't understand you" would you say "gee, I didn't know I had to be perfect..."?

I doubt it...well, we're talking about the same thing. When someone types, they should type it so that people will understand. Typed conversations are not the same as spoken ones. Or - if you're on AIM with JUST your personal friends, do what you and they want, but this is a site with many different people, some of whom would like to be able to read the posts, a site which by the way DOES have rules against "irritating posting style". Which is a FAR cry from a misspelled word or grammar error. No one is grading anyone (as we already said). This original post was asking for some common courtesy, not perfection.

Quote:
I feel sorry for the mods who have to read every post. I'm not asking for perfect grammar just a little punctuation in a sentence so I know when one thought ends and the next one begins.

My comment on punctuation is a joke going back to the start of the site, as old-timers here may remember (looks like Miss Poutyface does Razz). In fact, my thingummyjig used to say "Punctuation Police". Laughing

My thinking on this is.....that we all type with the intention of having everyone understand us, maybe the ones who accidentally leave out punctuation marks here there don't realize it or don't know any better. If you can't read it, don't read it, I would say or ask the poster to better explain themselves. I have seen many topics to this matter and I find my self saying "are you serious?!". I guess I'm just saying that when you already don't type too well it can be a bit discouraging.

Nice. But staff HAS to read it. Maybe if we can't read it, we should delete it. Confused Just kidding....kindof.

We don't have anyone here young enough to not know any better. If someone can type AT ALL, it's no extra effort to make it understandable. As a parent, I would say if my own child is unable to type coherently it's not the time for them to participate on a site at all.

There is absolutely no reason to take offense to this. Remember, as said several times -- we're not talking about simple mistakes. We're talking about text-speak and lack of punctuation and other things that are already specifically covered in the site rules. Staff does not have time to edit and PM everyone who does that. You have NO IDEA how much of this stuff we DO edit in the course of a day. At least have some respect for the people who are voluntarily taking time out of their own busy day to be sure you have a fun place to hang out, if it helps to look at it that way.

That was and is my opinion. Just because it is not liked doesn't make it anymore disrespectful then the rest of the comments. I thought when people post topics that you are suppose to post your input on the matter, maybe I'm wrong? Either way No worries.

I also HAVE to read it. Confused Not sure why, but I read every single post, blog entry, or blog comment that pops up here. Shocked Maybe I'm obsessed, but some posts I'll sit here for a few minutes just trying to find out what they're saying instead of just skipping it. I read EVERYTHING. Shocked Shocked Shocked

OK I have tried to not comment, but feel that maybe some are taking this to an extreme. I don't think the OP was referring to the occasional spelling error or grammar error. I don't see how typing and speaking are the same thing. If I typed how I spoke with my friends, I am not sure anyone would know what I was saying. Maybe ya'll don't know anyways. I think there are just some things we do as people on a planet with other people because we have manners and are courteous. I don't think it's too over the top for people who enjoy this site to ask that others use a period and some attempt at spelling out words. I teach second graders as most here know and am very good at figuring out misspelled words. That said these children can also write a complete paragraph with yes punctuation. If 7 and 8 year olds can handle it, then I don't think it's too much for kids 12 and older. I am by far the world's greatest speller and my grammar is not the best. In fact, is that apostrophe needed in world's. Razz I make mistakes from time to time and sometimes I edit them and sometimes I don't. Usually I don't because I don't realize it's a mistake. Rolling Eyes

We all just want to have fun here and share things with each other and it's just easier when it can be read without using up all our brain cells. Some of us would like to hold on to the last few we have left. Surprised

This is NOT about grammar or spelling. I am not the best at either. Embarassed I didn't start this to make people mad or upset. I am just asking for a period at the end of a thought. I'm like Bucky. I like reading all the posts. I may not answer them but I do read what is on others minds, even my favorite, all the polls. Rolling Eyes

As I said earlier, none of the posters I was thinking of have even replied to the thread and probably won't because the title of the thread is school related Mr. Green and they probably are avoiding anything that looks like school.

Now, see, I don't get this. No one said they didn't LIKE your opinion. No one said it was disrespectful. NO ONE said you couldn't post your opinion. No one said we all have to agree.

I still think many have missed the point of the thread, which is NOT simple mistakes. I don't guess saying that again will help. Confused

From a known non speeler and what is this grammar you speak of? I know my stuff isn't perfect and I very very rarely use speel chick (only if I really am clueless about how to spell something and it looks very wrong to me) I don't proof read. I just hit send. Of course there are mistakes but most of the time I think (???) it's readable and you all can understand what I'm saying? (well....as much as I can understand what I'm saying Confused) My point is....as a Mod who DOES have to read everything I've found lately there is some sort of new code speak that just is un-readbable! I'm hoping the poster(s) know better and are just trying to look "cool" or whatever.

Sorry to pick on the (for the most part) teens but the more we get on this site the worse it seems to get. We want perfect? Hardly! If that was the case most of us would be guilty and nobody would be reading. It's code/text chat/little symbols/no end or beginning of sentences either by capital letters or periods that make us crazy. Perfect spelling or perfect punctuation is not expected. Typo's happen. I can read typo. It's my second language Razz Readable is expected.

All we're asking is you respect the other forum members when you write.....K?

Thankyouverymuch Very Happy

See I did have a comment....I'm just not one to talk when it comes to doing things correctly. Then again I have to read others stuff....not so much my own Razz

You beat me to it, MST. Very Happy Instead I'll just add.
I'm a lurker on this site. I normally don't post because I'm too lazy to care. I tried to just keep my distance from this thread but I just can't anymore. Ya'll are taking this too far! Zippy isn't asking you to be perfect. Perfection doesn't exist. She's asking for you to put some effort into your posts. Put a period at the end of every sentence. Capitalize the beginning of every sentence. If you have time, spell check and read over your post to make sure it makes sense. If second grades can do it, so can you. We all make mistakes. It's part of life. All we're asking is just make sure others can understand what you're saying. As others above me have said, we all just want to have fun and share with others. That's the point of this site. It's easier to share and have fun when you don't have to scratch your head asking "What does that mean?"

Anyway, I think it's funny that the people taking this serious and getting worked up over it aren't the people with the problem.

Chill out,
Fraidy

Spell Check Approved Message Smile

PS.- Oh my! I post my reply and about five other people have said the same thing I did. Oh, well. Back to lurking. Laughing

I text with a lot of shortcuts, but when I'm on the forums, I try to keep my grammar and spelling decent enough for people to understand. It doesn't take that much time to add a few capital letters and some periods, trust me.

I would, also, like to point out that there are some common text abbreviations we all understand and that is not the the issue.

To me the issue is the complete use of texting, in a post. Yeah, most of us can get it but suffer through it. Texting is relatively new technology, still. Not everybody embraces technology in the same way others do. My husband is a complete geek and has the latest toys and terminology. I on the other hand prefer paper and pen. I completely baffle him. What is being asked and rather nicely is for the texters out there to remember, that we are not all texters. There are some OLD people on this site. There are some children that aren't allowed to have cell phones and therefore aren't allowed to text.

I really could care less if your spelling or grammar is correct. You aren't getting graded or publishing a book or paper. I get lazy and don't feel like pushing the shift key to make the letter capital. I think that is all that is being said. Nobody is criticizing anyone, anywhere for their English skills. In fact, I believe there might be some ESL toons here. Nobody picks on them.
