Disco Probs
View Single PostView Single Post

Banana Brain, I'm hoping I can pick your brain one more time Smile and the brain of anyone else who might have info on disconnects.

I have several TT accounts. I could run 3 puters simultaneously with virtually no discos until I moved last September. Both the old place and my new place are using cable internet. I've had regular probs with discos since the move. I've tried all of Banana Brain's suggestions in this thread:
http://www.toontownfriends.com/toontown-discussion8200.html (very informative post, BTW - Thank You!) Firmware's/drivers up to date, port triggering enabled on the two mentioned/I pinged myself and it ponged back, HEH. After getting booted about 10 times in a row one day, I got mad and went down and bought a gateway--thinking that if the prob was with my cable-company-provided modem, this should cure it. No difference. It's MUCH worse on the weekends than on weekdays, which makes me wonder if I'm just running into some sort of cable overuse issue. I'm in a relatively old apartment complex--I have no clue how old the cable is in this building, but if you slam the front door, the TV flickers (which is also on cable), so I question the integrity of the wiring.

My next plan of action is to call the cable co and see if I can talk them into sending a repair guy out. My guess is the repair guy is going to test it, say everything's hunky dory, and that'll be that (I'm guessing they'll balk at rewiring the whole apartment complex just for me). Which means (short of moving), my only real alternative is to try DSL, right? Am I missing something here? Any other alternatives out there? Should I try replacing the "thingie" that splits the cable from one wire to two (one to the TV, one to the puter)? Can one buy those "thingies" at a Radio Shack store? (Although I hate going to a store and asking for a "thingie"--embarrassing Smile ).

I only occasionally disco when running one puter on TT, especially during weekdays. My probs are mostly when I run two. I haven't even tried running three here at the apartment--no point. If I leave one toon on her estate doing nothing while I take the other toon through a battle, usually it's ok. If I try to run two toons at once, though, pretty soon one screen (usually the lappy) will freeze, and if I don't touch either puter until the frozen screen unfreezes, they sometimes survive. If I've already typed in some SF chat and have hit "enter" though, or if one of my toons is already going through a door, etc., forget it--the lappy will go first with the "your internet connection has been broken" message, and usually the PC follows. Occasionally the PC will survive--especially if I'm running the lappy wireless, then the PC tends to survive more often than when I'm running both wired. On weekends I can crash using only one puter, but it's much more likely to happen when I run two.

I think I've narrowed it down to a problem with the cable/cable connection. (Even though I was able to ping myself.) What do you think? Wouldn't DSL fix this if so? Since it's using a totally different (although potentially equally old) wiring?

Terri,

DSL may fix it due to the fact that it would be a dedicated connection to your router. If you do get the repair guy in there, slam the door and show him where it flickers. At the bear minimum, he should replace the splitter. You may be able to go to Radio Shack and fix that yourself. But it sure wouldn't hurt to have the guy out there to check the lines running into your apartment.

Yes, DSL may be your answer. In my old house we had cable and my computer would disco much more than it does now with wireless DSL. It's very very rare that I disco anymore (unless I hit THE BUTTON or it's a TT thingy)

As far as helping? Ummm that's what I have my brother for. Want me to send him over? Very Happy
