Well, if you're in a hurry, that's different. I would tell them "I only have a few minutes" and "I'm going to use sound". Then I'd go ahead with my plans once we're in and not worry about him one bit. If I do have time, I don't mind helping them. That's not to say I'll do what I do with friends and my own toons - where the goal is to use every gag in the bag (including all the restocks).  You just don't expect that from randoms. I have been known to do it if I have nothing else to do - I actually enjoy it if I have the time - but I can't do it every time.
My feeling is that anyone who runs with randoms takes what they get. So if a random goes in with you, he's on your game plan - just as if you go in with randoms planning to sound, and they have another agenda, too bad. It's pretty much "whoever picks the gag highest up in the rotation gets their way". And while it would have been nice for you to let him do a couple of gags, he should have been grateful for what he got - a trip through to look for a Mingler. _________________
