How convenient it is to say something really stupid then attempt to cover by saying "I was only joking". Actually, his first reaction was one of I'm not apologizing for anything. That's not what I said and to apologize for it is to buy into the malarky. That would almost seem to make it worse since he did later call it a "botched joke", along with whatever else he said about it. Which is it?
