| Snape is a jerk, but he's a good guy. How many times did he have the opportunity that he could have caused Harry's death - lots and lots. How many times did he save Harry, again, lots. Even from book one at the Quidditch match when Quirell was trying to knock Harry off the broom. They had assumed that when they saw Snape mumbling that he was doing it, but it was Quirell and Snape was trying to help. I'm not even 100% sure that Snape really hates Harry. There's a possibility, however slim, that Snape is acting in his visciousness towards Harry in order to keep up a double agent kinda thing with Voldemort.
I'm 99.99% sure that Snape is loyal to Dumbledore and that Dumbledore isn't dead. If Snape had let Malfoy use the curse, Dumbledor WOULD have been dead. Snape intervened with their emergency plan and saved Dumbledor's life. Where he's at or how he will come back, I have no clue.
