You need to wake the cog up to get the lure points.... Sound will wake him up and you will get the points when using sound but you did bring up a good point about not letting the cogs wake up on their own.

So if I lure 3 cogs, kill one off and the other 2 wake up on their own, I still get the points, right?  |
Correct.
If group lure is used then only one needs to be hit. Trap also counts as a 'hit'.
