The ONLY thing that matters in the boss HQs is that the invasion is ON at the moment the first toon starts to dance. Doesn't matter if the head dude is still there or not - the last cog can be exploded when it starts, but it MUST start before the dance does. If it starts one second later, you're out of luck. If it ends one second later, you are out of luck. It doesn't matter one bit if there was ever another invasion while you were killing cogs. Only if there is one at that certain moment in time. 
For working gags in buildings, it does matter. There must be an invasion while you use the gag in order to get the double credit. If one ends while you are still working on a floor, you get the credit (and invasion cogs) till you go to the next floor. If one starts in the middle of the floor, hurry to the next because you aren't getting anything extra until you get to the next floor! If you are hoping for merits, etc. in a building, you will only get double if the invasion is on when the dance begins.
